Pakistan inaugurates first green ship recycling yard at Gadani

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry on Wednesday said the successful launch of Pakistan’s first green ship recycling yard was a matter of national pride and marked a significant milestone in the country’s maritime history.

Addressing a ceremony held to inaugurate the Prime Green Recycling Yard, the minister said Pakistan has now met global standards for environment-friendly ship recycling and is fully compliant with the requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). He termed the achievement a “golden chapter” in Pakistan’s maritime sector.

Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said the Ministry of Maritime Affairs has initiated practical reforms across the maritime sector to modernize the industry and align it with international best practices. He noted that the Gadani Ship Recycling Zone is being developed on modern lines to ensure environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.

Emphasising worker welfare, the minister said the safety of labourers involved in ship recycling remains the government’s top priority. He also acknowledged the role of the Pakistan Shipbreakers Association in organizing and regulating the industry.

The federal minister said the modern ship recycling industry would create thousands of employment opportunities and help save valuable foreign exchange for the country. He added that Pakistan is emerging globally as a responsible and compliant country in the ship recycling industry.

Reiterating the government’s commitment, Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said the development of the maritime sector is among its top priorities and vowed to make Pakistan a sustainable and safe maritime leader in the region.
