Water level drops to near dead level in Tarbela Dam

In an alarming development, water level in Tarbela Dam dropped to near the dead level and water is available will fulfill the requirements of two days only, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Friday.

According to a report issued by Indus River System Authority (IRSA), current water level at Tarbela Dam is 80,000 cusecs while water level recorded at Mangla Dam reached is 2,00,000 acres feet.

IRSA further revealed that 60,000 cusec water is being discharged into rivers and 9,000 cusecs water level recorded in River Chenab at Head Marala.

The water is falling into River Jhelum at 17,000 cusec at Mangla in River Jhelum.

The water flow record at Tarbela for Indus River is 18,000 cusecs. 14,000 cusec water being arrived at Nowshera on River Kabul.

IRSA is facing 16 percent water short fall. Minus one temperature was recorded in Skardu. IRSA said that if the current temperature will not increase in near future then waterfall shortage likely to be reached at 30 percent.

A calamity of this nature would further constrict flows downstream, reduce drinking water supplies, and negatively impacting standing crops.

The current lower trend in river flows portends disaster for the agriculture sector, which is already struggling under an unprecedented heatwave, which causes abiotic stress in plants.
