Punjab launches crackdown on petrol hoarders, pumps to be sealed
PERA given powers to carry out operations across Punjab and petrol pumps found involved in hoarding
The Punjab government has launched a major crackdown against hoarding of petroleum products and illegal profiteering, with strict action ordered against petrol pumps involved in creating artificial shortages.
The operation has been initiated on the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who instructed authorities to take immediate action against elements attempting to exploit the public through illegal profiteering.
According to officials, the Punjab Enforcement and Regulatory Authority (PERA) has been activated to carry out the operation across the province. Petrol pumps found involved in hoarding or creating artificial shortages will be sealed, and their licences will be cancelled.
Chairing a review of the situation in Lahore, the chief minister directed PERA to adopt a “zero tolerance” policy against hoarders and ordered field officers to strictly monitor petrol pumps.
Officials said the Punjab government has effectively tightened its grip on what it described as the “petrol mafia,” warning that no one will be allowed to exploit the public under any circumstances.
The government also cautioned against spreading rumours about shortages of petroleum products, particularly in the context of tensions in the Gulf region. Authorities emphasized that there is sufficient stock of petroleum products available across Punjab.
“The public will never be allowed to be looted under the pretext of regional tensions,” the government statement said, adding that strict action will be taken against anyone attempting to create panic or artificial shortages.
The provincial government issued a stern warning that those involved in hoarding petroleum products or spreading speculation about shortages will face strict legal consequences.
