Senate sees heated debate over Bushra Bibi’s health and jail conditions

A heated debate took place in the Senate over the health and jail conditions of Bushra Bibi, with opposition and government lawmakers presenting opposing views on the matter.

Speaking during the Senate session, PTI leader and Senator Ali Zafar expressed serious concern over reports that Bushra Bibi had allegedly been taken secretly to a hospital during the night.

He said the nation was deeply worried about the situation, adding that the silence of the government and prison authorities regarding the alleged transfer was “suspicious.”

Ali Zafar stated that Bushra Bibi was being kept in solitary confinement and was allegedly being deprived of human and fundamental rights. He said putting someone’s health and life at risk for political revenge was unacceptable under any circumstances.

The PTI senator demanded that a transparent medical report regarding the health of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan's wife be immediately presented before the House. He also called for Bushra Bibi’s personal physician to be granted immediate access to Adiala Jail for a medical examination.

He demanded that Bushra Bibi’s family and daughters be allowed to meet her immediately and that a regular meeting schedule be established. Ali Zafar also urged authorities to transfer Bushra Bibi to Shifa International Hospital to ensure quality medical treatment.

He proposed that an independent medical board along with senators should visit Bushra Bibi for an examination and said the issue of her health should immediately be referred to the Senate Standing Committee on Human Rights.

Responding to the concerns, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah said Bushra Bibi and the PTI founder were currently in judicial custody after conviction by the court. He stated that the matter regarding Bushra Bibi’s living conditions in jail had already been formally discussed in the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

He said lawyer Salman Safdar had submitted a detailed report after visiting the jail as a friend of the court. According to Rana Sanaullah, the Chief Justice observed that the reports of the jail superintendent and Salman Safdar regarding facilities provided to Bushra Bibi were consistent.

He maintained that Bushra Bibi’s treatment was the responsibility of jail authorities and said proper care was being provided in accordance with legal regulations. Rana Sanaullah added that if there were any complaints regarding her treatment or facilities, the matter should be taken to the court.

He also noted that the issue of Bushra Bibi’s health and jail facilities had already been discussed before the Supreme Court.
