480 newborns die at Mithi Civil Hospital, Tharparkar in eight months

As many as 480 newborn babies died in the ICU of Civil Hospital Mithi during the first eight months of 2026, 24NewsHD TV reported on Monday. 

According to hospital records, 2,273 newborns were admitted to the hospital’s ICU for treatment between January and August, of whom 480 did not survive.

Hospital officials attributed the deaths mainly to malnutrition, low birth weight, and various illnesses.

According to the monthly figures, 70 newborns died in January, 39 in February, 54 in March, 47 in April, 65 in June, 69 in July and 61 in August.

The record did not provide a figure for May in the monthly breakdown.

May saw the highest number of ICU admissions, with 365 newborns receiving treatment during the month.

The hospital record shows that 1,387 babies were discharged after their health improved, while 106 were shifted to other hospitals for further treatment.

Another 126 newborns were taken away by their parents against medical advice, according to the hospital record.

Sources said malnutrition and early marriages were among the major factors contributing to low birth weight and poor nutritional health among children in the area.
