JUI postpones Friday protests after Naqvi-Fazl meeting

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Wednesday visited the residence of Maulana Fazlur Rehman in Islamabad, where both leaders held detailed talks on the country’s political landscape and evolving international developments.

The meeting was attended by senior JUI-F figures, including Maulana Atta-ur-Rehman, Allama Rashid Mahmood Soomro, Maulana Atta-ul-Haq Darwesh, Malik Sikandar Advocate, and Mufti Abrar.

During the discussion, Maulana Fazlur Rehman appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions in the Gulf region and facilitating a ceasefire.

According to sources, the interior minister urged the JUI-F chief to postpone the party’s protest demonstrations scheduled for Friday. The request followed similar appeals by leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) (PML-N), who also sought a delay in nationwide protests and a planned rally in Mardan on April 12.

Initially, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said the matter would be decided after internal party consultations.

However, later in the day, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) (JUI-F) announced it would postpone its Friday protests as a goodwill gesture.

In a statement, the party said the decision was taken in view of upcoming peace talks between the United States and Iran, scheduled to be held in Islamabad.

The move came after a message from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, conveyed through a government delegation, requesting the delay of protests due to the arrival of international delegations for the talks. The prime minister emphasized that postponing the demonstrations would project a positive image globally and support ongoing ceasefire efforts.

Responding to the request, Maulana Fazlur Rehman called for an immediate reduction in petrol prices. The government delegation assured that relief in fuel prices would be provided in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the JUI-F chief confirmed that a public gathering will be held in Mardan on April 12, urging supporters to attend. He said the party’s future course of action will be announced at the rally.
