Punjab govt plans free urban bus service across province

The Punjab government has prepared an initial plan to launch a free urban bus service across the province, aiming to provide affordable and accessible transportation to the public.
According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, under the proposed model, around 1,000 buses will be operated through private operators on a rental basis.
According to sources, the operators will be paid on a per-kilometre basis under a performance-linked system.
Each bus will be required to operate a minimum of 100 kilometres daily, while the maximum payable limit has been set at 200 kilometres. No additional payment will be made for distances exceeding this limit.
The routes for the buses will be determined based on passenger demand and necessity, ensuring efficient service in high-traffic and underserved areas. Under the agreement, operators will be responsible for bearing all operational costs, including drivers’ salaries, fuel, maintenance, and other expenses.
Officials said the government will make weekly payments to the operators, ensuring smooth financial flow and uninterrupted service. Notably, passengers will not be charged any fare, as the government will fully subsidise the service.
