PM Shehbaz urges restraint after fresh Iran-Israel clashes threaten fragile peace efforts

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday urged all parties involved in the Middle East conflict to exercise restraint and pursue diplomacy after a fresh exchange of attacks between Iran and Israel raised concerns about the stability of a fragile ceasefire in the region.

In a statement posted on X, Sharif warned that the latest violence highlighted the dangers of a tenuous truce and the potentially devastating consequences of renewed hostilities.

“The recent surge in violence in the Middle East is a stark reminder of the dangers associated with a tenuous ceasefire and the unbearable consequences it may lead to,” the prime minister said.

Sharif said Pakistan, along with its regional partners and allies, was continuing efforts to support a peaceful diplomatic resolution to the conflict.

He stressed that negotiations and dialogue offered the best chance for achieving lasting peace.

“As we work earnestly and painstakingly, together with our brothers and partners, to find a peaceful diplomatic solution to the conflict, and especially when the final objective is just about to be achieved, we sincerely urge all sides to exercise restraint and give peace a little more chance,” he said.

The prime minister called on all stakeholders to remain committed to diplomacy rather than military action, expressing hope that ongoing peace efforts could still succeed.

“Let us continue to remain on the path of peace and diplomacy which have bright prospects of success instead of violence and destruction,” he added.

Sharif’s appeal came after Israel and Iran exchanged attacks for the first time since a ceasefire in the Middle East conflict took effect on April 8.

The latest escalation occurred despite calls for restraint from Donald Trump.

According to reports, the flare-up began after Iran launched strikes in retaliation for an air attack on Beirut’s southern suburbs, prompting Israeli military action. The exchange has renewed fears of a broader regional confrontation and raised concerns that months of diplomatic efforts could be undermined.
