Umpire behind historic 1986 tied Test, Vikram Raju, passes away at 92

Former Indian international cricket umpire V Vikram Raju has died at the age of 92, 24NewsHD TV reported on Monday. 

According to the Indian Karnataka State Cricket Association, Raju passed away in Bengaluru on Sunday, prompting tributes from across the cricketing community for a man widely regarded as one of India's most respected umpires.

Raju officiated in two Test matches, five One-Day Internationals, and 42 first-class matches during his career.

However, he was best known for his role in one of cricket’s most dramatic contests, the historic tied Test between India and Australia in 1986.

Played at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium from Sept. 18 to Sept. 22, 1986, the match became only the second tied Test in cricket history.

The first had occurred in 1960 between Australia and the West Indies cricket team in Brisbane.

Chasing a target of 348 runs, India were bowled out for 347 in a thrilling finish that left the match tied.

The contest ended when Raju adjudged India’s last batsman, Maninder Singh, leg-before-wicket off a delivery from Australian spinner Greg Matthews.

The decision sparked intense debate at the time and drew criticism from some quarters, but it remains one of the most memorable moments in Test cricket history.

Raju stood alongside fellow umpire Dara Dotiwalla during the landmark match.

In a condolence message, the Karnataka State Cricket Association said Raju had served the game for decades with integrity, dignity, and professionalism, adding that his contributions to cricket would be remembered for years to come.

Even after retiring from on-field umpiring, Raju remained actively involved in the sport.

He worked as a match referee in domestic first-class competitions and also officiated in the Karnataka Premier League, now known as the KSCA Maharaja T20 Trophy.
