This year too, Aurat Azadi March participations, with a theme of ‘Mera Jism Meri Marzi’ come on the roads with placards inscribed with slogans and demands in addition to songs specially made for the march.
One of the participants held a placard with a slogan “ager dupatta itna pasnd hay toh apni ankon pay ley lo.”
Aurat March Lahore organizers uploaded the statement on its official Twitter account, “’Pidrshahi k dhabbay’ (Patriarchy ka pandemic) draws attention to everyday encounters with patriarchy. It brings together accounts of real women and girls, mentioning the age, along with other details, at which they first encountered patriarchy—whether it be in the form of violence, harassment, emotional abuse or denial of freedoms.”
“We use these clothing items to draw attention to the hidden, domestic labour that women perform. We use them because these clothes are extensions of our bodies. We use them also to show how normalised these interactions are,” Lahore Aurat March said.
“Today we talk about these hidden secrets, the stories that were once hidden in shame. It is now society's turn to feel the shame. We cannot hope to change society without first confronting the worst parts of it,” the statement reads.
