Jason Gillespie slams Sunil Gavaskar’s comments on Pakistan cricket

Former Pakistan head coach and Australian cricketing great Jason Gillespie has strongly rebuked Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar for his recent remarks suggesting that even a second or third-string Indian team could defeat Pakistan.

Gavaskar's comments came in the aftermath of Pakistan’s disappointing exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where the team suffered defeats against India and New Zealand. The former Indian captain asserted that an Indian B or C team could comfortably beat Pakistan in an ODI match, triggering a strong reaction from Gillespie.

Dismissing Gavaskar’s remarks as “absolute nonsense,” Gillespie defended Pakistan’s potential, stating that with the right management and support, the team is capable of competing against any opponent, including India.

“I don’t buy this rhetoric. I saw some comments from Sunil Gavaskar about the Indian B team or Indian C team beating Pakistan’s top team. That’s nonsense. Absolute nonsense,” Gillespie stated in an interview with PakPassion podcast.

The former Australian fast bowler further emphasized the importance of consistency in team selection and allowing players sufficient time to develop their skills.

“If Pakistan pick and stick with the right players, give them time to shine, time to learn, and develop their games, they can beat anyone. I have got no doubt about that,” he added.

Gillespie also pointed out the lack of patience within Pakistan cricket, urging selectors and management to show more faith in their squad instead of making frequent changes.

“They are high in talent. You just have to pick the right kind of talent, support them, and be patient with them. There’s far too much impatience, in my opinion, in Pakistan cricket,” he remarked.
