Punjab Council of Arts shuts down two theatres in Lahore

The Punjab Council of Arts on Saturday closed two theatres in Lahore for operating without valid licences.

The theatres affected by the move are Liaquat Theatre on Multan Road and Sitara Theatre in Gajjumta.

According to the administration, the licences of both theatres had expired and were not renewed despite repeated notices and warnings. Acting on directives from the Punjab government, the council sealed the theatres to ensure compliance with cultural and administrative regulations.

A spokesperson for the Punjab Council of Arts confirmed that the government’s orders are being strictly implemented. “Until the theatre administrations renew their licences, both theatres will remain closed,” the spokesperson said.

Sources said the council has issued fresh instructions to other theatres across the province, urging them to renew their licences on time and adhere to the legal framework governing cultural venues.

“The Punjab Council of Arts is committed to promoting cultural and artistic activities, but maintaining discipline and quality in theatres is equally important,” the spokesperson added.

The move is part of a broader effort by the Punjab government to ensure transparency, quality control and compliance in the province’s performing arts sector.
