Main Manto Nahi Hun: Khalil strikes back at critics of student-teacher relationship
Khalilur-Rehman Qamar has hit back at critics questioning the controversial student-teacher relationship portrayed in Main Manto Nahi Hun.
Speaking in an interview, Khalil maintained that the play is rooted in reality and reflects the struggles of individuals torn between societal expectations and personal truths.
“The character isn’t married, and even in reality, many married teachers have wed their students,” he stressed, lashing out at those who judge scripts without waiting to see how the story unfolds.
Main Manto Nahi Hun, starring Humayun Saeed in the lead, has been making headlines since its announcement.
Humayun described his role as one of the most powerful of his career, stressing that the character mirrors realities often observed in society.
According to him, the female lead is drawn to her teacher not out of rebellion, but because he treats her with kindness and respect, unlike the oppressive men around her.
The drama explores themes of love, betrayal, morality, and human vulnerability.
With its title referencing the legend Saadat Hasan Manto, the project has generated high expectations.
Khalil’s sharp dialogue and his reputation for bold storytelling have further intensified anticipation.
Khalil, however, did not limit his remarks to Main Manto Nahi Hun. He also took aim at the team behind Sunn Mere Dil, criticizing them for extending the drama from 14 to 24 episodes. “This is happening for the first time. I challenge anyone to dare do it,” he said.
Sunn Mere Dil, produced by Abdullah Kadwani under 7th Sky Entertainment and directed by Haseeb Hassan, premiered on Geo TV in October 2024. The drama has been well-received, but the playwright has voiced concerns over its stretched storyline.
