Critics urge duchess to ditch lifestyle ventures and return to acting
Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, is being urged to revisit her former profession in acting following criticism of her Netflix series, With Love, Meghan.
The second season of the lifestyle-inspired show has received a lukewarm response, with culture critics suggesting that the former actress may be better off returning to her Hollywood roots.
Writing for the Los Angeles Times, critic Mary McNamara delivered a scathing review that reignited debate about Meghan’s career trajectory.
“I admit to being part of the problem. Season 1 was such an apoplectic-fit-inducing experience – Meghan, sweetheart, you did not invent the frittata, no one likes dried flowers as a garnish and don’t come at moms who put ‘sugary snacks’ in birthday party gift bags while handing a bunch of 5-year-olds some pointy-ass miniature gardening tools instead — that I could barely watch the first two episodes of Season 2,” McNamara wrote.
She continued by acknowledging Markle’s personal challenges but stressed that her talent could be better utilised in acting.
“I take no pleasure in hating With Love, Meghan — Markle is a local gal who inarguably got a very bum deal in her early married life, and I honestly want her to succeed. But maybe she would be better off returning to her previous profession: acting.”
McNamara further pointed out that while Meghan’s Netflix deal has reportedly been downgraded to a “first look” arrangement, opportunities still exist for her in entertainment. “Her Netflix deal may have been downgraded to ‘first look,’ but it’s a big entertainment company; surely there is something she could do. Here are a few suggestions,” she added, hinting that the Duchess could reclaim success by pursuing roles more suited to her experience.
Meghan Markle, who rose to international fame through her role as Rachel Zane in the hit legal drama Suits, left acting after marrying Prince Harry in 2018. Since stepping back from royal duties in 2020, she and Harry have pursued media and philanthropic ventures under their Archewell foundation.
However, the couple’s projects, particularly their media content, have faced criticism and commercial challenges. Critics argue that Meghan’s natural screen presence may still hold the key to revitalising her career.
