The federal government has approved a hike in power tariff for the people of Karachi, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Thursday.

According to sources, the centre okayed the increase in power tariff by Rs4.76 per unit.

The insiders said the hike has been made to maintain a uniform electricity tariff across the country.

Additional collections from consumers will be made from March to May 2023, the sources said

a few days ago, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) issued a notification to hike the power tariff.

The authority approved an additional surcharge of Rs 3.39 per unit. The consumers are already paying 43 paise per unit surcharge.

The additional surcharge will be applicable for 2023-24 and the K-electric customers will also be burdened.

Reportedly, the government surrendered to another IMF demand by imposing an additional surcharge.

The step has been taken to generate Rs335b more in revenue over the next fiscal year to finance the power sector’s debt and liabilities.
