Govt waives demurrage on auctioned containers to ease congestion at Karachi Port
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has announced an important relief measure at Karachi Port Trust aimed at reducing congestion and speeding up cargo handling operations.
According to the minister, demurrage charges on containers auctioned at the port have been waived to facilitate the quick clearance of long-pending cargo.
He said that no demurrage will be collected if the containers are cleared within seven days of the announcement, adding that the decision was made in coordination with the port’s private terminal operators.
The maritime affairs minister stated that the move is intended to reduce the rush at the port and accelerate the cargo handling process.
He added that the special concession will help in the release of containers that have been stuck at the port for a long time, creating additional space for transhipment cargo and improving overall port efficiency.
