Pakistan calls for stronger, modern Commonwealth at Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

Pakistan called for a more effective, modern and stronger Commonwealth of Nations during the 26th Commonwealth Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in London on March 8, 2026.

The meeting was attended by foreign ministers and senior representatives from Commonwealth member states to set priorities and consider proposals aimed at strengthening the organisation.

Pakistan was represented at the meeting by its High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Muhammad Faisal, on behalf of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, who could not attend due to the prevailing regional situation.

In his address, Dr. Faisal emphasized the urgent need for a Commonwealth that is more active and relevant in a rapidly changing and complex global environment. He said the current global situation is marked by divisions, geopolitical tensions and growing pressure on traditional institutions.

He noted that the moment presents both a challenge and an opportunity for the Commonwealth to re-emerge as a global community, reassess its significance and strengthen its shared purpose. However, he also cautioned against tendencies to create new power centers within the organisation.

Highlighting the importance of reforms, the High Commissioner said that the Secretary-General’s reform proposals should be considered seriously and constructively by member states. He stressed that Commonwealth foreign ministers and leaders must play an active role not only in shaping institutional reforms but also in promoting meaningful cooperation among member countries.

Dr. Faisal also underlined Pakistan’s view that the Commonwealth should focus on practical outcomes that directly benefit its citizens. He said priorities should include strengthening economic stability, facilitating trade, encouraging investment, addressing sustainable debt management challenges and advancing sustainable development.

He urged member states to use the changing global context as an opportunity to transform the Commonwealth into an effective platform for solidarity and shared prosperity.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment, Dr. Faisal said the country will continue to work closely with other Commonwealth members to make the organization more modern, strong and responsive to the needs of its people through meaningful reforms and practical initiatives.
