Punjab shuts ‘Nigehban Dastarkhwans’ amid economic pressures

Citing the economic impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the Punjab government has decided to implement austerity measures and reduce public spending across the province.

As part of the decision, authorities have announced the closure of government-run Nigehban Dastarkhwans, which were established to provide free meals to the needy during Ramadan. Government-arranged Iftar points will also remain closed across Punjab.

Officials said the move is part of a broader austerity policy aimed at controlling expenditures in light of the prevailing economic situation.

However, authorities emphasized that alternative relief measures are being considered to support deserving individuals during Ramadan. A new mechanism is expected to be introduced to ensure that welfare facilities for the underprivileged continue in some form.

Officials added that while government-managed Nighban Dastarkhwans will be discontinued, philanthropists and charitable organizations may continue operating such meal services independently to assist those in need during the holy month.
