New York Mayor Mamdani appoints Pakistani-American to top team

The newly elected and first Muslim mayor of New York City, Zhran Mamdani, has begun forming his transition team following his landmark victory, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Sunday.

In a significant appointment, Pakistani-American legal expert Lena Maleeha Khan has been named co-chair of the transition team, according to an announcement made on Friday.

The 36-year-old Khan previously served as the Chairperson of the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), where she gained national recognition for her progressive stance on corporate regulation and technology oversight.

Speaking about her new role, Maleeha Khan said the incoming administration is determined to make New York a city where the working class can live with dignity and stability.

She emphasized the need for policies that ensure affordability, equitable housing, and economic opportunity for all New Yorkers.

Mayor-elect Mamdani, a former state legislator and community organizer of Ugandan-Indian descent, is expected to unveil the full transition team in the coming days as he prepares to take office.
