Legal options discussed as NAB chairman’s 3-year term nears end

The three-year non-extendable term of NAB Chairman Lt. Gen. (Retd) Nazir Ahmed is set to end in March, with only a few weeks remaining, sources said.

According to sources, the notification for the current NAB chairman’s appointment was issued on March 6, 2023. Under the existing law, the chairman’s three-year tenure cannot be extended, nor does the law permit reappointment after completion of the term.

However, sources said the government has the option to amend the law if it wishes to keep the NAB chairman in office beyond the current tenure.

Sources revealed that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has expressed reservations over the three-year non-extendable term of the NAB chairman, terming it a potential threat to the independence of the institution.

The matter is being discussed in relevant circles as the end of the tenure approaches.
