Incessant heavy rain lashed several Punjab cities on Thursday morning causing waterlogging, traffic jams, submerging low-lying areas and turning Lahore into a deluge, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Thick clouds darkened many cities including Lahore as the day broke and then rain started to pummel the cities as soon as the sun rose from the east, throwing the routing life out of gear. 

The heavy downpour kept hitting the cities uninterrupted even after 10:00 am, and came to a halt after 10:30 am.

In Lahore, the heavy rainfall submerged low-lying areas and major roads, exposing the city’s inadequate drainage infrastructure.

The heavy rain also caused widespread power outages. As soon as the downpour began, multiple Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) feeders tripped, cutting electricity to large parts of the city.

Two people were killed in the Punjab capital while eight others were injured after the roofs of their houses collapsed due to heavy rain.

Rescue teams shifted the injured to a hospital.  

50-year-old Bashir was killed in Nishtar Colony when the roof of his house caved in. Two others namely 42-year-old Nabeela and 22-year-old Tahira Bashir were injured.

In another incident, reported from near the railway station, two-year-old Zainab was killed while 25-year-old Bushra Bibi, 45-year-old Afzal and four-year-old Abdul Waheed were wounded.

Record rain in Lahore

Lahore received average 136mm rain during eight hours early today with Nishtar Town was pummeled with record 178mm rain.

Iqbal Town and Paniwala Talab received 175mm rain each.

Samanabad and Naulakha localities of the city received 109 millimeters each.

Meanwhile, heavy downpour led to leading of roofs at Jinnah Hospital in Lahore where rainwater accumulated right in front of the Emergency Ward.

Persistent rain laid bare the tall claims made by the administration that the arrangements had been made to drain out the water as several areas of the provincial capital were completely submerged.

The situation was pathetic in Gulshan Ravi, WAPDA Town, PIA Road, Township, Green Town and other areas where both pedestrians and vehicles were under knee-deep water. 

Similarly, litigants found it hard to get to the courts as all courts in the city were surrounded by pools of water. 

Rain was also reported from other Punjab cities, including Faisalabad, Sarai Alamgir, Pindi Bhattian, Nankana Sahib, Khangah Dogran, Farooqabad, Manawala, Shergarh, Kharian, Wazirabad, Arifwala, Pakpattan, Pattoki, Narowal and Gujranwala.

CM’s directive against urban flooding

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed the concerned officials to take measures to tackle urban flooding in view of the uninterrupted rain across Punjab.

She also issued orders to immediately clear the central and internal roads of every city.

The chief minister also directed to pace up water drainage from low-lying areas.

Maryam Nawaz also ordered to ensure implementation of the SOPs issued by PDMA ahead of the monsoon season.

She also directed WASA officials to head to the filed themselves and constantly monitor the water drainage.

250 Lesco feeders tripped

As usual, the heavy rain has severely affected the electricity supply system, tripping 250 Lesco feeders due to technical issues.

The trippings led to suspension of power to a number of areas in Lahore.

These areas included Sabzazar, Santnagar, Islampura, Gulberg, China Scheme, Manga Mandi, Sherakot, Wagah, Shah Jamal, Shalamar and Baghbanpura.

Rain turns Narowal into pool

Light to heavy rain in and around Narowal besides inundating low-lying areas also flooded main roads, making it difficult for pedestrians and motorists to commute. 

Roads around Passport Office, Education Office, CO Health Office and Department of Agriculture were completely submerged.     

There were also reports of rain from several parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Sindh, resulting in a deluge in streams and nullahs.  

 Rain floods Shakargarh

Torrential rain in and around Shakargarh flooded low-lying areas as well as main roads, creating a lot of inconvenience for the residents.

Gujranwala submerged after downpour 

Likewise, heavy rain in Gujranwala completely flooded the city. 

All areas of the city, including posh localities, were completely inundated. 

Rain in Sindh 

Torrential rains continue to lash different parts of Sindh as well.

In Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Khairpur Nathan Shah and Dadu, heavy rain inundated low-lying areas, roads and even entered people’s homes. 

Although the weather turned pleasant but it came at a cost as the supply of electricity was suspended and weak structures were badly damaged.  

More rains forecast

Meanwhile, the weather department predicted thundershowers, accompanied by strong winds, for north-east and central Punjab, twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Kashmir, KP, Gilgit Baltistan (GB), north-east and southern Balochistan during the next 24 hours. 

It said the rain might be heaviest at a few places. 

Man electrocuted in Wazirabad

One person was electrocuted in Wazirabad when his wet clothes came into contact with a fan. 

He was rushed to a hospital but he did not survive.

The deceased was identified as Riaz Masih. 

Woman injured in Gujranwala 

A 45-year-old woman was injured when the roof of her house caved in in Gujranwala.

The woman was taken to a hospital.

Man, son injured in Okara

A man and his son were injured after the roof of their house came down crashing on them in a suburban village of Okara.

The incident took place in village 54-L. 

Rescuers from Rescue 1122 rushed to the spot and provided them first aid after which they were shifted to a hospital.

Those who were injured were Hassan, son of Arif (age 7) and Arif, son of Sadiq, (age 40).
