Watch Ghusl-e-Ka’aba: Ka’aba cleansing ceremony held in Makkah

In a deeply symbolic and sacred ritual, the annual ceremonial washing of the Ka’aba, Islam’s holiest site, was performed early Thursday within the Grand Mosque in Makkah.

The revered tradition, known as Ghusl-e-Ka’aba, was carried out under the direction of Prince Saud bin Meshal, Deputy Governor of Makkah, acting on behalf of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz.

The spiritually rich ceremony involves the cleansing of the Kaaba’s interior walls with Zamzam water, rose water, and premium oud oil, filling the sacred chamber with a fragrant aura.

The ritual begins after a special stairway is wheeled into position, allowing a select group of dignitaries, scholars, and senior Saudi officials to enter the Kaaba’s inner sanctum. Once inside, the walls are carefully wiped down using pieces of cloth soaked in the scented mixture, perfumed with incense and some of the finest fragrances in the world.

The Ghusl Kaaba ceremony, steeped in history and reverence, is held twice annually — once before the holy month of Ramadan, and again in the early days of Muharram, following Hajj.

Though participation is limited to a chosen few, images and video footage from the ceremony are broadcast globally, offering Muslims worldwide a moment of shared spirituality and connection to the Qibla, the sacred direction Muslims face in prayer.

The tradition, which dates back to the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), has been preserved and performed by successive Muslim rulers, and today, under the patronage of the Saudi monarchy, it remains a cornerstone of Islamic ritual heritage.

As the Ka’aba is ritually purified and perfumed, the event underscores its central place in Muslim faith and unity — serving as a reminder of the collective devotion of over 1.8 billion Muslims across the globe.
