NDMA issues flood and landslide alerts for northern areas

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued flood and landslide alerts for northern parts of the country from June 10 to 15, warning of possible flash floods, river overflows and travel disruptions due to expected rainfall in mountainous regions.

According to the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC), the current weather pattern is consistent with forecasts and advance alerts issued by the authority several months ago.

The NDMA said rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms could trigger flash flooding at local levels in Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). Flooding is also expected in rivers, streams and rain-fed waterways in hilly areas.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, flash flood risks have been identified in Chitral, Shangla, Kohistan, Battagram and Mansehra districts.

The authority warned that local flooding could also occur in Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Bagh and Rawalakot in Azad Kashmir.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, rivers and streams in Ghizer, Yasin, Diamer, Tangir, Darel and Gilgit districts may experience rising water levels and flood-like conditions.

The NDMA advised residents living near rivers, streams and low-lying areas to take precautionary measures and remain vigilant.

Tourists and travelers have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel to mountainous areas during periods of heavy rainfall.

The authority directed district administrations and relief agencies to keep emergency response teams, rescue equipment and dewatering machinery on standby to respond to any emergency situation.

In urban areas vulnerable to flooding, local authorities have been instructed to ensure the cleaning of drainage systems and waterways to prevent water accumulation.

Separately, the NEOC issued a landslide alert for Gilgit-Baltistan and adjoining mountainous regions from June 12 to 15.

According to the advisory, temporary road closures and travel difficulties may occur at several locations along the Karakoram Highway and the Jaglot-Skardu Road.

The NDMA identified Chilas, Bashidas, Thalpan, Shingas Nallah, Shaitan Nallah, Chamacho and Tarmak Nallah among the most vulnerable locations where landslides and debris flows could occur.

Landslide risks have also been reported near the Attabad Tunnel, Shimshal, Kharmang and eastern Baltistan regions due to unstable mountain slopes.

Emergency response agencies have been instructed to remain on high alert and ensure the availability of machinery and resources for immediate clearance and rescue operations if required.

The NDMA advised residents of vulnerable areas to follow weather updates and instructions issued by local authorities and encouraged citizens to use the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert App for timely information and emergency alerts.

The authority has directed all relevant departments and agencies to remain vigilant and take preventive measures to minimize the impact of possible flooding and landslides during the forecast period.
