Karachi confirms first death from naegleria in 2025

A 36-year-old woman from Gulshan-e-Iqbal has died due to Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the "brain-eating amoeba," the Sindh Health Department confirmed on Monday.

According to health officials, the patient was admitted on February 19 with symptoms and naegleria infection was confirmed on February 24.

Doctors revealed that the woman used tap water for daily activities, including ablution. Experts warn that naegleria thrives in clean water with insufficient chlorine levels.

Health specialists emphasize that proper chlorination of water tanks is the only prevention, as the amoeba enters the brain through the nose and mouth, causing a rapidly fatal infection.
