UN chief urges Iran-US ‘good faith’ engagement
Antonio Guterres calls on parties to ‘seize this diplomatic opportunity’ for lasting deal
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the Iran-US talks that are mediated by Pakistan, scheduled to start in Islamabad today, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Saturday.
Addressing a daily briefing in New York on Friday, UN chief’s spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said "He calls on the parties to seize this diplomatic opportunity to engage in good faith toward a lasting and comprehensive agreement, with a view to de-escalation and the prevention of a return to hostilities."
"The Secretary-General reiterates that there is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes, in full accordance with international law, including the UN Charter," Dujarric said.
The UN chief's personal envoy for the Middle East conflict and its consequences, Jean Arnault, continues to be in the region to support diplomatic efforts, Dujarric added.
The talks come amid a fragile two-week ceasefire between Washington and Tehran announced on Tuesday and aimed at creating space for diplomacy after weeks of heightened tensions.
US Vice-President JD Vance departed Washington on Friday to take part in the Islamabad talks, alongside special envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner, who were previously involved in indirect contacts with Iranian officials.
