Punjab launches ‘Maryam Ka Insaf’ to enforce police accountability

A new phase of accountability and institutional reform in the Punjab Police has begun with the launch of the “Maryam Ka Insaf” project by the chief minister, signalling a sweeping effort to restore public trust in law enforcement, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Wednesday.

According to officials, the initiative is being described as a major accountability drive within the Punjab Police, launched after more than 58,000 complaints were received from citizens.

The volume of grievances prompted the government to order urgent reforms aimed at addressing systemic weaknesses in policing.

Under the new framework, a zero-tolerance policy has been enforced against flawed investigations and delays in the disposal of cases. Authorities say such practices have long undermined confidence in the criminal justice system and will no longer be tolerated.

The government has also announced the formation of a strict accountability mechanism to ensure police officers are held accountable for their conduct.

Immediate action will be taken against personnel found guilty of mistreatment or abuse of citizens, supported by a newly developed response mechanism.

To enhance transparency, all police operations will now be video recorded. In addition, standard operating procedures governing arrests and raids are being revised to curb the misuse of powers and ensure compliance with the law.

For faster resolution of public complaints, a gazetted officer will be directly responsible for redress, while a comprehensive review of the past two years’ performance records of police personnel will be conducted.

Officials indicated that disciplinary action may follow where performance falls short of required standards.

The government says the reforms mark the beginning of a new era of accountability in the Punjab Police, with a focus on transparency, professionalism, and public service.
