Washington weighs oil tanker seizures to pressure Tehran

The United States has begun considering a plan to seize Iranian oil tankers as part of efforts to increase pressure on Tehran, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Wednesday.

According to US officials cited by The Wall Street Journal, discussions are underway about taking control of Iranian oil-carrying vessels if ongoing negotiations fail to produce an agreement.

A US official said the proposal was discussed as a means to intensify pressure on Iran by targeting its oil exports, which remain the country’s largest source of revenue.

The report added that American officials believe the measure could significantly disrupt Tehran’s ability to sell oil, particularly through covert shipping networks operating in international waters.

However, US authorities have also expressed concern over the potential consequences of such a move, including possible retaliatory actions by Iran.

Officials are also worried about the broader impact on global oil markets, warning that any escalation in the Middle East could lead to volatility in energy prices and affect international supply chains.
