Authorities intensify cyber monitoring ahead of Muharram

Police and counterterrorism authorities have stepped up cyber surveillance ahead of Muharram and warned of strict action against individuals who misuse social media to spread sectarian hatred, misinformation, or content that could disturb law and order.

According to officials, the Counter Terrorism Department and the police have enhanced cyber-patrolling efforts to monitor online activity during the sensitive period.

Authorities said several social media accounts operating from outside Pakistan had become active and were allegedly attempting to spread provocative content and create unrest through online platforms.

Officials added that, following the identification of such accounts by police and the Counter Terrorism Department, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had initiated the process of blocking relevant accounts and websites.

Speaking on the matter, DIG Operations Lahore Faisal Kamran urged citizens to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious, inflammatory or sectarian content to law enforcement authorities.

"If citizens come across such posts, they should immediately inform the police," he said.

The police official also cautioned social media users against forwarding unverified content, particularly material related to sectarian issues.

"Forwarding sectarian content without verification is also a crime," Faisal Kamran said.

Authorities said legal action would be taken against individuals involved in spreading hate speech, sectarian material or content aimed at inciting violence during Muharram.

Law enforcement agencies have increased security and monitoring measures across the country ahead of Muharram processions and gatherings to ensure public safety and maintain religious harmony.
