Storms bring relief across Punjab but claim lives in Lahore and Narowal
Strong winds, rain and thunderstorms brought relief from intense heat across several cities of Punjab on Thursday, but severe weather also claimed lives and caused flooding, power outages and disruption in various areas.
In Lahore, a motorcyclist was killed after a tree fell on him during rain and strong winds in the Jallo Dial village area along Canal Road in Harbanspura.
The deceased was identified as Muhammad Akmal, son of Nazir Ahmed and a resident of Imamia Colony. According to officials, he was riding alone when the tree collapsed. The Lahore Traffic Police informed rescue services, local police and the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) about the incident.
Elsewhere in the provincial capital, strong winds swept through several areas, including Nishtar Park Sports Complex, Gaddafi Stadium, National Hockey Stadium, Punjab Stadium and the International Swimming Complex.
Dark clouds covered the sky as gusty winds lowered temperatures and improved weather conditions across the city. Similar weather was reported in Township, Samanabad and surrounding localities.
The current temperature in Lahore was recorded at 36 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was expected to remain around 26 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department forecast further rainfall in the city.

According to data released by Water and Sanitation Agency, the highest rainfall of 33.9 millimetres was recorded at the airport. Other rainfall readings included Gulberg (28 mm), Tajpura (27 mm), Upper Mall (19.8 mm), Mughalpura (12 mm), Nishtar Town (8.6 mm), Johar Town (6.2 mm) and Defence Road (4.8 mm).
Officials said WASA Managing Director Ghufran Ahmed was monitoring drainage operations throughout the city.
Meanwhile, heavy rain accompanied by thunder, lightning and hailstorms lashed Narowal and surrounding areas, bringing an end to the ongoing heatwave.
Authorities said a lightning strike killed two teenagers, identified as 13-year-old Hanzala and 17-year-old Shahzeb, while a 55-year-old man suffered serious injuries. The victims were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital.
The storm caused widespread urban flooding in Narowal, where rainwater accumulated up to two to three feet deep in streets, markets and low-lying areas. Residents reported that many roads resembled streams after nearly half an hour of heavy rainfall.
Several government offices, including the Passport Office, Chief Officer Health Office and Chief Officer Education Office, were reportedly inundated with rainwater.
Power outages were also reported after electricity feeders tripped during the storm, plunging large parts of the city into darkness.
In Patoki, rain continued in the city and nearby areas, bringing relief from the heat and pleasant weather conditions. Residents welcomed the rainfall as temperatures dropped significantly.
The weather system affected several parts of Punjab, providing respite from soaring temperatures while also causing localized flooding, traffic disruptions and weather-related casualties.
