Suspects in DI Khan suicide case grease palms of victim’s brothers to avoid action

In a twist in the story of a man committing suicide in Paharpur area of Dera Ismael Khan after his 12-year-old daughter was married off to a suspect’s son to settle a dispute, the suspects, instead of approaching the heirs of the deceased Adil, who was a barber by profession, paid Rs300,000 to his brothers instead to stop them from taking any legal action, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Tuesday. 

Police too, on the other hand, have neither got the post-mortem examination of Adil’s body done nor have they been able to get forensic of the audio, which he had recorded prior to his death.   

Meanwhile, a court on Monday granted a three-day physical remand of two, out of three suspects, to the police. 

Besides that, the Force has also failed to nab three other persons, including the key suspect Malik Inayatullah. 

On the other hand, ASP Ali Hamza has said that it is the police’s duty to protect the life, property and honour of citizens. “We came to know about the incident through social media. I wish the villagers had informed us well in time,” the official said, adding, “All characters responsible for the barber’s suicide will be brought to justice.”

On Monday, 24News TV channel reported that the police in Paharpur area of Dera Ismael Khan had arrested three people besides carrying out raids for the arrests of three others in connection with the suicide of a barber who ended his life after his 11-year-old daughter was given in marriage (Vani) to the suspect’s son only because his (barber) nephew had talked to the suspect’s daughter.

In an audio, which Adil, the girl’s father, recorded before committing suicide, he said that he was going to end his life in the hope that perhaps his sacrifice could save the future of his child. 

Police said that a few days ago, at a marriage ceremony of Adil’s elder daughter at Bagwani Shumali village, suspect Farid’s daughter was seen talking to Adil’s nephew. 

Infuriated over this, Farid raised the issue at a panchayat, which summoned the barber.  

The panchayat imposed Rs700,000 in fine on Adil’s nephew for talking to Farid’s daughter.

However, even after receiving the amount, Farid’s anger failed to subside and he again raised the issue at a panchayat.

This time the panchayat forcibly married off Adil’s daughter to Farid’s son.

This left the barber extremely dejected who at last committed suicide. 

Police swung into action after the news of the incident went viral on social media, registered a case and also made arrests.  

Police officials have said that the affected girl has been handed over to her family. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed has taken notice of the case and sought a detailed report.

Regional Police Officer Syed Ashfaq Anwar directed Assistant Superintendent Police (ASP) Ali Hamza to ensure the swift arrest of all involved.

The incident has sparked grief and outrage among locals, who are demanding severe punishment for those responsible.

Vani is a custom where girls, often minors, are given in marriage or servitude to an aggrieved family as compensation to end disputes, often murder or involving females.
