Prominent Pakistani actress Sajal Aly has lately been criticized severely for the portrayal of a character known as ‘Ashi’ which is being perceived as a controversial role in her newly released movie “What’s Love Got To Do With It.”
It is pertinent to mention here that the movie “What's Love Got to Do with It?” is a 2022 British romantic comedy film directed by Shekhar Kapur and written by Jemima Khan (wife of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan).
“What’s Love Got To Do With It” features Sajal Aly depicting the character of a ‘Muslim girl’ known as ‘Ashi’ who is bound in an arrange marriage with her London-based, childhood neighbor ‘Kazim’ (British actor Shazad Latif).

However as the film progresses, Ashi and Kazim’s marriage does not end up working out and then both Kazim and Ashi decide to go their separate ways.
Despite the film receiving widespread appreciation, Pakistani fans however seem quite displeased regarding Sajal Aly’s latest character choice as it is conveying that ‘arrange marriages’ are a complete disaster and should not be considered at all.
Most people feel that Sajal Aly has unintentionally reinforced negative stereotype about Pakistani women while some online users have criticized the Pakistani actress for her bold appearance in the film and have suggested that the actress should pay proper attention towards selecting roles.
