Pakistan reopens Kartarpur Corridor after ceasefire; India yet to respond

Pakistan has restored the Kartarpur Corridor for Sikh devotees shortly after the announcement of a ceasefire agreement with India, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Sunday.

The corridor had been closed on May 7 due to heightened border tensions following Indian drone attacks on Pakistani territory. While Pakistan has reopened its side of the corridor, India has yet to allow Sikh pilgrims to cross over to perform their religious duties.

According to Kartarpur Corridor management, India has not shared any information regarding the resumption of pilgrim travel. As a result, while local and overseas Sikh pilgrims continue to arrive from the Pakistani side, the Zero Line Gate on the Indian side remains closed.

It is pertinent to note that on May 9, the corridor remained non-operational for the third consecutive day, and now management has decided to close the Kartarpur Corridor indefinitely due to a lack of coordination from India.

On May 8, 2025, the Indian government formally announced the temporary suspension of the corridor, citing security concerns amidst the India-Pakistan conflict. The decision came as a blow to thousands of Sikh devotees who regularly visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, a sacred site where Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, spent the final years of his life.

The Kartarpur Corridor, inaugurated in 2019, had enabled visa-free access for Indian Sikh pilgrims and was hailed as a landmark gesture of religious diplomacy between the two nations.
