Pakistan has registered nine more deaths and 554 infections from the coronavirus pandemic during the last 24 hours (Wednesday), showed the figures released by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Thursday morning. 

As per the NCOC data, after the addition of nine new deaths, the overall toll has now surged to 28,575 whereas the number of total infections now stood at 1,278,751 after adding the fresh 637 cases.

During the last 24 hours (Wednesday), a total of 48,883 tests were conducted throughout Pakistan whereas the positivity ratio stood at 1.30 percent. The number of patients in critical care was 1,156.

During the last 24 hours (Wednesday), as many as 316 patients have recovered from the virus whereas the total recoveries stood at 1,226,906. As of Thursday, the total count of active cases in the country was recorded at 23,270.

As many as 472,925 coronavirus cases have so far been confirmed in Sindh, 441,493 in Punjab, 178,846 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 107,223 in Islamabad, 33,368 in Balochistan, 34,498 in Azad Kashmir and 10,398 in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Moreover, 12,962 individuals have lost their lives to the pandemic in Punjab so far, 7,599 in Sindh, 5,782 in KP, 947 in Islamabad, 741 in Azad Kashmir, 358 in Balochistan and 186 in Gilgit Baltistan.

- More than five million dead - 

The coronavirus has killed at least 5,062,911 people since the outbreak emerged in China in December 2019, according to a tally from official sources compiled by AFP on Wednesday. 

The US has suffered the most Covid-related deaths with 757,409, followed by Brazil with 609,756, India with 461,849, Mexico with 290,110 and Russia with 250,454.

The countries with the most new deaths were the US with 1,585, followed by Russia with 1,239 and Ukraine with 816.

Taking into account excess mortality linked to Covid-19, the WHO estimates the overall death toll could be two to three times higher.
