Sherry Rehman raises alarm over rising number of child abuse cases

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Vice-President Senator Sherry Rehman on Friday expressed her displeasure over the rising number of child abuse cases in the country, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Sherry Rehman said that the registration of 1,914 cases of child abuse from January 2026 to June 2026 is alarming. She said that 80 percent of these cases of child abuse were reported from Punjab, which showed that the provincial government has miserably failed to control these incidents.

Sherry Rehman said that 43 cases of child abuse involved their relatives, which showed a lack of domestic attention to the children.

It is most distressing that approximately 45 percent of the incidents of child abuse occur within the children's own homes, so we must make the home environment safe.

She said that 57 percent of the cases of child abuse were reported from urban areas and 43 percent from rural areas.

Sherry Rehman stressed the need for early hearings and conclusion of child abuse cases. She further said that an exemplary punishment should be awarded to all those accused who were found involved in this crime.
