Shubman Gill becomes fastest to 2500 ODI runs, surpasses Hashim Amla

India's opener Shubman Gill on Wednesday made history by becoming the fastest batter to reach 2,500 ODI runs, breaking Hashim Amla’s record by doing so in just 50 matches.

He also scored his seventh ODI century during the third match of the series against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Gill, in great form, played a solid innings after Rohit Sharma's early dismissal. Partnering with Virat Kohli (52), he helped rebuild India’s innings, reaching his century off 95 balls.

Gill has been in top form throughout the series, notching up 87 runs in Nagpur (February 6) and 60 in Cuttack (February 9). His stellar performances have played a crucial role in India’s dominance, as they seek a series sweep before heading to Dubai for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

His consistency has also been reflected in the ICC ODI rankings, where he recently climbed to No. 2, surpassing India captain Rohit Sharma. Gill now holds 781 rating points, while Rohit has 773. However, Pakistan’s Babar Azam remains at No. 1 with 786 points, keeping the race for the top spot competitive.

Meanwhile, Babar Azam is also chasing a record—he needs just 33 more runs in Pakistan’s upcoming ODI against South Africa in Karachi to become the fastest batsman to reach 6000 ODI runs.

Gill, who made his ODI debut against New Zealand on January 31, 2019, continues to establish himself as one of the most promising young batters in world cricket.
