Deadly floods sweep Bangladesh as heavy rains leave 44 dead

Several days of heavy rainfall have triggered severe flooding across parts of Bangladesh, leaving at least 44 people dead in landslides and other rain-related incidents, the 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Sunday.

The prolonged downpours have caused widespread disruption, with electricity supplies cut, roads heavily damaged and communication networks severely affected in many flood-hit areas.

Bangladeshi media reported that seven districts in the country's south-eastern region have been badly affected by the flooding.

More than 200,000 people are believed to be trapped as rising water levels continue to isolate communities.

Rescue and relief operations are under way, with the military and emergency response teams working to evacuate stranded residents and deliver assistance to the worst-affected areas.
