Streaming giant Netflix has expanded its technology ambitions by acquiring InterPositive, an artificial intelligence filmmaking company founded by actor and filmmaker Ben Affleck.

According to an official announcement, the company confirmed that the entire InterPositive team will join Netflix as part of the deal.

Affleck, who launched the startup in 2022, will remain involved as a senior adviser while continuing to support the development of the technology.

The company was created with the goal of developing AI tools designed specifically for filmmakers.

Unlike some emerging technologies that attempt to replicate actors or generate performances, InterPositive’s tools focus primarily on assisting production teams during post production.

The system can help with tasks such as adjusting lighting, recreating missing shots, and replacing backgrounds when filming conditions require corrections.

Affleck explained that the idea for InterPositive emerged as artificial intelligence began rapidly expanding across the entertainment industry.

Concerned about how the technology could affect creative professionals, he said the project was designed to ensure that artists remain at the centre of storytelling rather than being replaced by automated systems.

To develop the technology, Affleck and a team of engineers trained their first AI model using a controlled dataset created on a specially designed soundstage that simulated a real film set.

The goal, he said, was to build tools that assist filmmakers while maintaining strict safeguards so creative decisions remain in human hands.

Netflix executives also emphasised that the partnership reflects a shared vision of using innovation to empower storytellers.

Company leaders said the technology could give filmmakers more flexibility and creative options without diminishing the role of directors, actors and other industry professionals.

The acquisition comes at a time when artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly important topic in the entertainment industry, with major studios exploring how the technology can streamline production while preserving artistic control.
