October 12, 2021 11:27 PM

The government has brought new rules to 'rein in the unbridled social media', 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Tuesday

The Ministry of Information Technology and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) have carved new social media rules and the federal cabinet gave approval. The Ministry of Information Technology will soon issue a notification, sources said.

These rules have suggestions from all stakeholders, including the public. Earlier, the rules were challenged by social media companies.

The new rules describe the issuance of notices, cases and proceedings and all social media companies will be required to be registered with PTA within 3 months under these regulations.

The social media forums will be required to open their permanent offices in six months and they will appoint a compliance officer and a grievance officer in 3 months.

The grievances officer will be bound to resolve the issue within 7 days of the complaint being registered and social media companies will issue online complaint mechanisms and community guidelines.

Social media companies will be fined up to Rs500 million for violating the rules and they will be required to abide by the local laws. The grievance registration mechanism and form are also included in the rules.
