LHC reserves verdict on petition seeking ban on ‘hooliganism’

August 13, 2021 11:55 AM

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday reserved its verdict on the admissibility of petition filed to bar youngsters from hooliganism on roads to celebrate the country’s Independence Day on August 14th during the days of the holy month of Muharram, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

During the hearing, Justice Anwaar Hussain admonished the applicant’s lawyer for filing the petition of ‘public interest’ without preparation. “If I make you chief secretary, Punjab right now, with all deputy commissioners of the province under your command, how will you stop the youth from partying out on roads during the days of the holy month?” he inquired.

He further asked him to tell what was the exact population of Punjab and how many youngsters blew whistles and horns one night before Independence Day?

When the counsel for the petitioner replied he did not want to become chief secretary, Justice Anwaar replied then why he filed the petition when he did not have complete information. “Why are you not fined for wasting court’s precious time?” the judge asked.

The man, who made Inspector General of Police, Punjab, Punjab government as well as the federal government respondents in the petition, had stated in the petition that youth resorted to hooliganism on the days leading up to the Independence Day and the police merely acted like a silent spectator. “Therefore, it is prayed to the court to ban the sale of whistles and horns during August and also noisy celebrations by youngsters,” the petitioner requested.
