Messi’s Kolkata visit marred by fan frenzy and disorder

Chaos erupted at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Friday after unruly behavior by fans disrupted an event attended by Argentine football icon Lionel Messi, 24NewsHD TV reported. 

The chaos has raised serious concerns about crowd management and security arrangements for international sporting personalities in India.

Messi had arrived in Kolkata to participate in a promotional ceremony at the iconic stadium, where thousands of fans gathered to catch a glimpse of the global football superstar.

However, the situation quickly spiralled out of control as overly excited supporters became aggressive after being denied direct access to the footballer.

Moments after Messi emerged from the tunnel, the situation spiralled out of control.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who had arrived in Kolkata for the special event, along with former India captain Sourav Ganguly and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, were unable to participate in the programme as the event was cut short amid the chaos.

According to eyewitnesses, frustrated fans began throwing bottles and chairs onto the ground, creating panic among attendees and security personnel.

A large number of spectators also breached the security cordon and entered the field, overwhelming officials tasked with maintaining order.

In light of the escalating situation and security risks, authorities swiftly escorted Messi out of the stadium, cutting short his appearance.

The footballer was safely returned to his accommodation under heightened security measures.

The incident has sparked criticism over India’s preparedness to host high-profile international athletes, with observers questioning the effectiveness of crowd control mechanisms at major venues.

Messi is scheduled to take part in several promotional and charity events during his visit to India.

However, Saturday’s disorder has cast a shadow over the remaining engagements, prompting calls for stricter security protocols to ensure the safety of international guests.
