Social media platforms have been asked to register in Pakistan, says Talal Chaudhry

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry has said that accounts involved in spreading terrorism on social media are being operated from India and Afghanistan, while terrorist organizations are actively using digital platforms by repeatedly changing their names to evade detection.

In a conversation with 24NewsHD TV, Talal stated that negative and fake videos aimed at maligning Pakistan are being uploaded on social media as part of a coordinated propaganda campaign. He said that in the past terrorists used guns, but now they are using social media as a major tool to spread fear, misinformation and extremist narratives.

The minister said that the government has formally written to social media platforms, directing them to register in Pakistan in accordance with the law. He emphasized that these platforms should establish offices in Pakistan and cooperate fully with the government on counter-terrorism efforts.

Talal Chaudhry pointed out that Pakistan is a frontline state in the global fight against terrorism, warning that if Pakistan is weakened, the security of the entire world would be at risk. He expressed concern that accounts identified as being operated from Pakistan are often not removed by social media companies despite clear violations.

Warning of possible action, the Minister said that if social media platforms fail to comply with the laws of Pakistan, the government would be left with no option but to take action against them. He specifically noted that cooperation from social media platform X remains negligible, while platforms such as Telegram and TalkTalk are cooperating well with Pakistani authorities.

The Minister reiterated the government’s resolve to counter digital terrorism and ensure that social media is not misused to threaten national security.
