Nara Canal director warns of 40% water shortage for Kharif season

The director of Nara Canal has warned that agricultural water supply from canal may be shut down due to water shortage in rivers, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Talking to media men in Kunri area of Umerkot on Thursday, Director of Nara Canal Ashfaq Memon said that IRSA had declared a 23 percent agricultural water shortage in the Rabi season. Water shortage has not been declared for the Kharif season because rivers are facing a 29 percent water shortage, he added.

“If this situation continues, the agricultural water shortage in the Kharif season may increase to 40 percent,” Director of Nara Canal said.

He said that if there is a 40 percent shortage, there may be a 21-day agricultural water shutdown in the Kharif season.

Ashfaq Memon said that water supply has started in Nawakot and Samaro sub-divisions and water will be provided to Nabisar sub-division tomorrow.

Due to non-release of funds this year, the work of de-silting in Nabisar sub-division has been done with the help of farmers as 70 percent of the expenses for the de-silting were borne by the farmers and 30 percent by the Irrigation Department. Director said.

Director Nara Canal also reviewed the work of CC laying and de-silting campaign of Nabisar Sub-Division.
