ECP rejects Sindh govt’s request to postpone LG elections

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has declared that the second round of local government elections in Sindh will be held as per schedule on January 15, setting aside the provincial government’s request to defer them, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

The decision was made in an important meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja at ECP in Islamabad on Friday.

The ECP meeting reviewed the Sindh government’s request and the notifications pleading the Commission to postpone LG elections in Karachi Division, Hyderabad and two tehsils of Dadu District – Khairpur Nathan and Mehar.

Rejecting the request and the notifications, the ECP made it clear that the LG elections will not be deferred in any case.

Keeping in view the legal and constitutional requirements, the ECP accorded disapproval to the provincial government’s request.

The ECP declared LG polls in Karachi Division, Hyderabad and other districts will by held according to the schedule on January 15.
The ECP also directed the Interior Ministry to ensure deployment of Army/Rangers at very sensitive polling stations during the LG elections.
