Over 200 reptiles and amphibians found in suitcase at Dubai Airport

Customs officials at Dubai International Airport have recovered more than 200 reptiles and amphibians from an unclaimed suitcase, in a rare and unusual case of suspected wildlife smuggling, 24NewsHD TV reported.

According to authorities, the abandoned baggage was flagged during routine screening after it appeared suspicious.

A detailed inspection later revealed a large number of live creatures hidden inside.

The recovered animals included 129 lizards, 36 scorpions, 8 snakes, and 50 frogs, totaling over 200 reptiles and amphibians.

Dubai Customs said that modern border security is not only about preventing prohibited goods but also about protecting biodiversity and natural ecosystems.

Following the discovery, the seized animals were handed over for care in coordination with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment.

Legal and veterinary procedures have also been completed to ensure proper handling of the recovered wildlife.

Authorities noted that this is not an isolated case. In a similar incident last month, Dubai Customs foiled an attempt to smuggle a rare bear, which was found dead inside a passenger’s luggage.
