No canal from River Indus sans Sindh’s nod, Murad tables resolution in SA

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Thursday tabled a resolution in the Sindh Assembly (SA) in which it was categorically stated that no canal could be carved out from the River Indus without the consent of the Sindh government, reported 24NewsHD TV channel. 

Declaring the carving out of canals, including the Cholistan Canal, a blatant violation of the Water Accord of 1991, the resolution made it clear that nobody would be allowed to deprive Sindh of its share in the water resources. 

The resolution demanded the implementation of the Water Accord of 1991. 

It was stated in the resolution that new canals could lead to an environmental crisis in Sindh because the water shortage resulting from it would adversely affect crop production, the economy and the routine life of the people. “There will be no compromise on the province’s share in the water resources.” 

CM Murad, in his resolution, made it clear that the Sindh government would protect the rights of the people of the province at all costs, and any attempt to rob the province of its rights would be resisted.  

He called for a dialogue between the Center and the provincial government on the issue.  

PTI supports Sindh CM’s resolution

On the other hand, the PTI threw its weight behind the resolution tabled by the Sindh chief minister. 

The PTI MPA Sajjad Soomro said that the party supported the resolution. 

However, he said that the party’s parliamentary leader in the House would table its own resolution on the issue as well.
