South Africa reach 216/6, trail Pakistan's 378 by 162 runs on day two

At the close of the second day in the first Test match between Pakistan and South Africa at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, the visitors were 216 for six in response to Pakistan’s total of 378, 24NewsHD TV reported on Monday. 

 South Africa now need another 162 runs to level the score, with Tony de Zorzi on 81 not out and Senuran Muthusamy unbeaten on 6.

South African captain Aiden Markram fell early, dismissed for 20 by Noman Ali, with wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan taking the catch behind the stumps.

At 80, Vian Mulder also fell to Noman Ali, caught by Rizwan for 17 runs.

Ryan Rickelton scored 71 runs, while the rest of the batting line-up collapsed.

Stubbs was dismissed for 8, Brevis for a duck, and Verreyn for just 2 runs, as Pakistan’s bowlers dominated.

Noman Ali was the star for Pakistan, claiming 4 wickets for 85 runs, while Salman Ali Agha and Sajid Khan both took a wicket each.

South Africa now needs 162 more runs to match Pakistan’s first-innings total, with Tony de Zorzi (81*) and Mathewesame (6*) remaining at the crease.

Earlier, Pakistan resumed their innings at 313/5, with Mohammad Rizwan on 62 and Salman Ali Agha on 52. Rizwan added 13 more runs before being dismissed for 75, with Noman Ali and Sajid Khan both falling in the same over without scoring.

All three wickets were claimed by South Africa’s senior bowler, Mathewesame.

Salman Ali Agha narrowly missed a century, dismissed for 93, while Shaheen Shah Afridi was out for 7 runs.

Pakistan’s first innings ended at 378 all out.

Mathewesame was the standout bowler for South Africa, claiming 6 wickets, while Parnell and Rabada both contributed with two and one wicket, respectively.

Simon Harmer also picked up a wicket.

Noman removed skipper Aiden Markram for 20 and Wiaan Mulder for 17 -- both caught behind by wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan -- in extracting spin from the Gaddafi Stadium pitch after Senuran Muthusamy took a career-best 6-117 in the morning.

At the break Ryan Rickelton and Tony de Zorzi were unbeaten on 45 and 23 respectively, with the tourists still trailing by 266 runs in the first innings.

Noman has figures of 2-47.

It was Noman's like-for-like left-armer Muthusamy who destroyed Pakistan after they resumed on 313-5, losing their last five wickets for just 16 runs.

Salman Agha hit five fours and three sixes in his 93 and was last man out, caught in the deep off spinner Prenelan Subrayen, who took 2-78.

Agha added 49 with Rizwan to take their sixth-wicket stand to 163 before Muthusamy ripped out the middle order with three wickets in the 12th over of the day.

Rizwan was the first to go, for 75, when he edged a sharply turning ball to wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne after a knock containing two fours and two sixes.

Two balls later Noman went without scoring, bowled when he played down the wrong line and then Sajid Khan followed first ball, caught in the slips.

It became 378-9 when Muthusamy bowled Shaheen Shah Afridi, on seven, for his sixth wicket.

His previous Test best was 4-45 against Bangladesh in Chattogram last year.
