Another 73 people breathed their last and 4,786 were infected by coronavirus throughout Pakistan during the last 24 hours (Friday), showed the figures released by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Saturday morning.

As per the NCOC figures, after the addition of 73 new deaths, the overall toll has now surged to 24,339 whereas the number of total infections now stood at 1,094,699 after adding the fresh 4,786 cases.

During the last 24 hours (Friday), a total of 59,136 tests were conducted throughout Pakistan whereas the positivity ratio stood at 8.09 percent.

During the last 24 hours (Friday), as many as 4,343 patients have recovered from the virus whereas the total recoveries stood at 983,754. As of Friday, the total count of active cases in the country was recorded at 86,606.

As many as 409,578 coronavirus cases have so far been confirmed in Sindh, 370,599 in Punjab, 151,466 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 93,339 in Islamabad, 31,507 in Balochistan, 28,982 in Azad Kashmir and 9,228 in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Moreover, 11,329 individuals have lost their lives to the pandemic in Punjab so far, 6,384 in Sindh, 4,640 in KP, 830 in Islamabad, 662 in Azad Kashmir, 332 in Balochistan and 162 in Gilgit Baltistan.

Israelis aged 50 and over begin receiving vaccine booster shots as part of a government bid to stem spiking infections driven by the Delta variant.

The United States authorises an extra dose of vaccine for people with weakened immune systems.

- Norway to lift curbs -

Norway will lift the majority of its remaining Covid restrictions once all adults have been offered a vaccine, which is expected to be around September 6, the government says.

- Malaysian economy hit -

Malaysia's central bank slashes its 2021 economic growth forecast, citing the re-imposition of coronavirus curbs, bringing its forecast to between 3.0-4.0 percent.

- More than 4.3 million dead -

The coronavirus pandemic has killed at least 4,337,725 people worldwide since the virus first emerged in late 2019, according to an AFP compilation of official data. 

The US is the worst-affected country with 619,230 deaths, followed by Brazil with 566,896, India with 430,254, Mexico with 246,811 and Peru with 197,209.
