Gay bags pair as Bashir shines, Babar injured in Pakistan tour game

England opener Emilio Gay suffered a pair while Shoaib Bashir claimed four wickets as the Professional County Club Select XI strengthened its position against Pakistan on the second day of the three-day tour match at Beckenham on Friday.

The Select XI reached 128 for three in their second innings at stumps, extending their overall lead to 195 runs after bowling Pakistan out for 238.

The tourists also suffered an injury concern ahead of the first Test against England after captain Babar Azam was struck on the right hand by a delivery from Manny Lumsden and retired hurt.

Babar was subsequently ruled out of the remainder of the practice match as a precaution.

Pakistan resumed the day on 44 without loss in reply to the Select XI's first-innings total of 305.

Azan Awais added only one run to his overnight score before Matt Fisher had him caught behind for 15.

Imam-ul-Haq and Abdullah Shafique then attempted to consolidate, with scoring remaining slow before Shafique broke the shackles by hitting Bashir for six.

Bashir dismissed Imam for 37, caught behind, before Pakistan suffered their biggest concern of the day when Babar was hit on the right hand by Lumsden.

Babar was unable to continue batting and retired hurt. The blow came to the same area of the hand that he had previously injured during the second Test against West Indies.

Pakistan reached lunch at 119 for two, with Shafique completing his half-century after the interval before retiring not out on 54.

Bashir then struck again when Salman Ali Agha was caught by Caleb Falconer at short leg for 14.

Lumsden removed Saud Shakeel in the following over, Saif Zaib taking the catch at midwicket, before Awais Zafar was dismissed without scoring after skying the same bowler to Noah Thain at backward point.

Bashir picked up his third wicket when Aamer Jamal was caught by Falconer for eight.

Zaib then bowled Mohammad Rizwan for 22, after which Shafique was allowed to return to the crease. Pakistan went to tea at 222 for seven.

Shafique eventually top-scored with 61 before he was caught by Josh Hull off Zaib in the third over of the evening session.

Bashir wrapped up Pakistan's innings by having Muhammad Ghazi Ghori caught by Zaib at short fine leg, finishing with figures of 4-76.

Pakistan were dismissed for 238, conceding a first-innings deficit of 67.

The Select XI's second innings began badly when Gay completed a pair. After being dismissed without scoring in the first innings, the England Test opener again fell for a duck, edging Mohammad Ali behind to Rizwan after facing seven balls.

Sajid Khan then bowled Tom Haines for 12 to give Pakistan another early breakthrough.

James Rew and Falconer steadied the innings with an attacking 67-run partnership for the third wicket.

Rew made 40 before Salman Ali Agha had him caught by Saud Shakeel, but Falconer remained unbeaten on 52 at stumps.

Pakistan had an opportunity to claim another late wicket when Zaib offered a chance off Salman, but Shakeel put down the catch in the penultimate over.

The Select XI closed on 128 for three, leaving Pakistan facing a 195-run deficit heading into the final day.
