Fiza voices for daughter-in-law’s rights, flays Saba Faisal over bridal dress remark

Fiza Ali has spoken out in support of daughters-in-law’s rights, sharing her views on personal choice.

Deliberating upon a bride’s right to make her own decisions, she said that a wedding dress is more than just clothing, as it represents a bride’s hopes and dreams and therefore, she deserves a say in selecting it.

According to Fiza, a truly peaceful home is one where the daughter-in-law feels respected and at ease, not merely silent or submissive.

Fiza added that a woman wanting to wear clothes according to her own preference should not be seen as disrespectful but as a natural desire.

She emphasized that while a mother-in-law’s opinion matters, taking away a daughter-in-law’s right to make decisions is not love but control.

Highlighting a common social issue, she pointed out that a woman’s happiness is often prioritized when she is a daughter, but once she becomes a daughter-in-law, she is expected to suppress her wishes and remain quiet.

Fiza stressed that healthy relationships are built on mutual respect rather than force. She suggested that mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law should make decisions together, as harmony in a household comes from understanding, not dominance.

She further explained that while silence may appear to maintain peace, it can be harmful in the long run. Women, she said, are often taught that speaking up will ruin the home, while staying quiet will keep everything intact, adding that silence may offer temporary calm but not lasting happiness.

Concluding her remarks, Fiza said that overlooking minor issues can be wise, but remaining silent in the face of injustice, disrespect, or oppression is neither patience nor dignity. Referring to Islamic teachings, she added that Islam encourages speaking the truth with wisdom rather than staying silent in the face of wrongdoing.

Actress Saba Faisal sparked discussion with her remarks on a morning show, where she expressed disagreement with the idea of mothers-in-law allowing brides to independently choose and shop for wedding.

Sharing her experience, she said that in the past, newly married women wore outfits selected by their in-laws and she followed the same tradition.

During the show, Saba Faisal stated that, in her view, one of the biggest mistakes some mothers of grooms make today is giving brides complete freedom to design and select their wedding wardrobes from the very beginning.

She said that handing over all such decisions to the bride at the start was not a good approach. While acknowledging that it is not wrong for a bride to wear clothes, she feels comfortable in, she added that issues arise when a bride continues to wear only the outfits she personally selected from the first day of marriage, which she believes can affect balance in a new household.
