Bavuma hails team’s resilience, praises Markram and Rabada after WTC glory

As Temba Bavuma walked toward the presentation area at Lord’s following South Africa’s monumental victory over Australia in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final on Saturday, the crowd erupted into thunderous applause — the loudest cheer reserved for the man who led the Proteas to their first ICC title in nearly three decades.

Despite the emotional weight of the moment, Bavuma maintained a composed demeanor as he addressed the media in the post-match interview, offering heartfelt reflections on what the triumph means to him personally, to his teammates, and to the entire Rainbow Nation.

“It has been a special couple of days, felt like we were back home in South Africa with the support we have had,” Bavuma said. “Special moment for us as a team, special moment back home. It will take a couple of days to sink in.”

The 35-year-old skipper spoke about the years of pain and struggle endured by South African cricket, from narrow defeats to a long-standing tag of ‘chokers’ in global tournaments.

“The energy was there. We have been wanting this as a team. We have been knocking on the door, we have gone through the heartache, the disappointments, seen it with the past players, and now the sun is on us. Hopefully this is one of many,” he said, his words echoing the collective relief of a nation that had waited 27 years for another ICC triumph.

Bavuma also took a moment to single out individual performers who were pivotal in the victory, particularly pacer Kagiso Rabada and Man of the Match Aiden Markram.

“KG is a massive player. In a couple of years, he’ll be in the ICC Hall of Fame. He was under controversy, but he did what he does best,” Bavuma noted, referencing Rabada’s ability to perform under pressure.

“Markram was unbelievable. Stats are important, but character is what we look at — and Aiden has that. Another massive player for us,” he added.
